May the 8th 2017 seen the restarting of the AWAKE plasma accelerator at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. To mark the occasion, who better than author/researcher Anthony Patch to give us a breakdown of everything you need to know about this & more!

WHAT IS AWAKE?
CERN is home to the worlds larges particle accelerator, the LHC – Large Hadron Collider, and most people are familiar with the 17mile ring that has 2 counter rotating streams of particles accelerated to near the speed of light. The AWAKE – Advanced Proton Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration machine differs from the ring in a number of ways.
Firstly, AWAKE – Advanced Wakefield Experiment is a linear accelerator – a 30 meter machine with a 10 meter chamber of plasma for acceleration – as opposed to the 17 mile ring we are accustomed to.
Secondly, AWAKE uses highly charged plasma to accelerate particles as opposed to the radio frequency method incorported into the main LHC ring.
The Advanced Proton Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration Experiment (AWAKE) aims at studying plasma wakefield generation and electron acceleration driven by proton bunches. It is a proof-of-principle R&D experiment at CERN and the world׳s first proton driven plasma wakefield acceleration experiment. The AWAKE experiment will be installed in the former CNGS facility and uses the 400 GeV/c proton beam bunches from the SPS. The first experiments will focus on the self-modulation instability of the long
Particles accelerate in electrical fields. This is what accelerates the particles in the main ring at CERN with Radio Frequency & super-conducting magnets being used to create the electrical fields.
Bigger electrical fields results in particles being charged to higher energies & for scientists to reach high energies with the current linear technology, we would be talking about super-colliders in the near future up to 100km in diameter.
One way of reaching these higher energies is to come up with an alternative way to create the electrical fields necessary & that is where the plasma comes into the equation.

The CERN SPS proton beam in the CNGS facility will be injected into a 10 m plasma cell where the long proton bunches will be modulated into significantly shorter micro-bunches. These micro- bunches will then initiate a strong wakefield in the plasma with peak fields above 1 GV/m that will be harnessed to accelerate a bunch of electrons from about 20 MeV to the GeV scale within a few meters.
Plasma is the fourth state of matter and in previous plasma experiment, lasers have been employed to created the “waves” necessary for acceleration to occur. The laser is pulsed to create a steady flow of waves in the plasma. As the laser passes through the plasma it ionises it forcing electrons within the plasma to ionise, this creates a wave effect, and by inserting a “witness beam” of electrons at the AWAKE experiment, they are accelerated in a similar fashion to surfers riding the wake created by a boat travelling on the surface of the water.
What is different and new with AWAKE is that instead of the laser method mentioned above, protons will be accelerated in the Super Proton Synchrotron – SPS, then be fed into the plasma to act as the “driver beam”, or the boat if you think of the surfer analogy, and this in turn will create bigger waves, or a larger wake, than the laser. This larger distance results in higher energies being achieved. The electron witness beam as a bigger wave to ride, hence protons are more effective than the lasers previously used in labs.
IMPORTANT – WE HAVE PREVIOUSLY STATED THAT AWAKE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE 1000X MORE POWERFUL THAN RING BASED ACCELERATORS. THE 1000X INCREASE IS IN THE EFFECIENCY TO ACCELERATE THE PARTICLES OVER A SHORT DISTANCE, IN THE CASE OF AWAKE ITS 10 METERS.
Eventually, CERN plan to take protons from the main beam and accelerate them to higher energies as opposed to the elecrons in the witness beam described above.

How AWAKE beam will be sent to the North Area beam dump.
A new primary beam line is designed and built to fulfil the AWAKE requirements for the North Area.
The p (proton) beam is extracted from the SPS, and injected into the LHC, then to AWAKE, then by transfer line to the North Area beam dump.
Switching magnets (MBS type) (Magnetic Bond Sensor) are installed to divert the AWAKE beam, along with dipole (bending) and quadrupole (focusing) magnets, toward the North Area.
