A newly discovered planet could be the best hope yet when it comes to finding alien life.
Scientists from thre Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics have announced that a super-Earth named LHS114ob is the “most exciting exoplanet” seen in a long time. They go on to say that we could “hardly hope for a better target” to find aliens.
The Independent reports….
The planet is much ten times closer to its star than we are. But its own sun is a red dwarf, so it only receives about half as much sunlight and lies right in the middle of the habitable zone.
“This is the most exciting exoplanet I’ve seen in the past decade,” said lead author Jason Dittmann of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. “We could hardly hope for a better target to perform one of the biggest quests in science — searching for evidence of life beyond Earth.”
LHS1140 is is in the Cetus (sea monster) constellation & said to be going through a period that would make it favourable to any alien life.
Nicola Astudillo-Defru of the Geneva Observatory, Switzerland says “the present conditions of the red dwarf are particularly favourable – LHS 1140 spins more slowly and emits less high-energy radiation than other similar low-mass stars“.
Given that this newly discovered world lies in the habitable zone of its solar system, then there may be a chance that it has liquid oceans & an atmosphere not to unlike our own here on earth.
Its said, and it is pure speculation in my opinion, that LHS1140 is in the region of five billion years old, but how they can tell this having only just discovered the thing is beyond me!
In recent months there has been a spate of announcements concerning exoplanets that may have the right conditions for life, with Proxima b & Trappist-1 also said to be candidates, but the astronomical community seem confident that the newest planet is the best hope out of them all.
Time, and lots of money, will hopefully shed some light on whether or not these exoplanets are home to our alien brethren, but dont go holding your breath.
And always bare in mind that announcements like this could well be a major step down the road to a project blue beam type fake alien disclosure event.
